One man has been killed after opening fire at deputies responding to reports of shoplifting at a Walmart in Texas.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office said one suspect is still on the run following an incident which occurred at around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday in the 21100 block of Kuykendahl Road in Spring.

Speaking to reporters at the scene, Sgt Jason Brown of the Harris County Sheriff's Office said deputies were dispatched to the Walmart to calls of an ongoing shoplifting in place.

The employees at the store called 911 after spotting one of the men allegedly attempting to steal some items from inside the store.

Deputies arrived at the scene and spotted the suspects in the Walmart parking lot. The suspects then entered a vehicle, with the deputies attempting to make a traffic stop on the vehicle inside the parking lot.

One of the suspects exited the vehicle and began firing at deputies several times with a handgun. Deputies returned fire and struck the suspect. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Brown said the second suspect in the vehicle fled the scene and has not been apprehended.

"The second suspect fled in the vehicle after the shooting took place," Brown said. "We don't believe that he was shot in the shooting. We also don't believe that he fired at the deputies as far as we know, and we believed that suspect participated in the attempted theft inside the Walmart."

Brown added that deputies did recover a gun from the scene and that the killed suspect fired at the deputies "several times" before they opened fire.

The Harris County Sheriff's office have not identified the suspect who was killed and could not provide a description for the second beyond that he is an adult male.

The Walmart employees said this was not the first time that the suspects had stolen from the store.

Brown said they will be reviewing surveillance footage from the parking lot and from inside Walmart as part of the investigation.

According to KHOU, two other suspects who were also in the black SUV fled the scene, but they were later located and are cooperating with the investigation.

However, Click 2 Houston reports that two men who were in a vehicle that matched the description of the suspect's SUV were stopped after it arrived at the scene.

The pair were questioned by deputies before being released and leaving the scene in the same vehicle.

The Harris County Sheriff's office has been contacted for clarification.
