Thor: Love and Thunder is the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film to come to theaters. But if you want to actually hear what the characters are saying amid the mass screaming at whatever the latest bit of Marvel fan service is, you might want to wait for the movie to come to streaming.
Marvel films have been a mixed bag when it comes to streaming release dates. Some have been available to watch online quite soon after their initial theatrical releases, while others have taken much longer. And then there are the hugely popular MCU installments still not available on any streaming service.
MCU movies, however, have recently started to standardize their streaming release schedules. This means that we have a fairly good idea of exactly when and where the fourth Thor movie will be streaming.
Where will Thor: Love and Thunder be streaming?
With the exception of the films that Sony has distribution rights to (that is, the Spider-Man and Venom films), all Marvel movies come to the same streaming service.
That streamer is Disney+, and Thor: Love and Thunder will be going there later this year.
When willThor: Love and Thunder stream?
Disney+ took some time to determine exactly when MCU films would come to streaming. Black Widow was available on Disney+ at the exact same time it came to theaters, while Shang-Chi and Eternals took 71 days and 69 days respectively. Spider-Man: No Way Home, however, is not on Disney+ due to it being a Sony release.
The latest Marvel movie was Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, which took a shorter 47 days.
It seems likely that Disney will now stick to around a 45-day theatrical window for its MCU releases. Forty-five days is starting to become an industry standard for big blockbusters, with both Paramount and Warner Bros. releasing their major releases to streaming services Paramount+ and HBO Max respectively after that time. Though there are still some exceptions (Tom Cruise is said to be lobbying to prevent Top Gun: Maverick from getting this window), 45 days is becoming the norm.
Why was Disney+'s Doctor Strange release window a day longer? Because if a film is released in theaters on a Friday, then 46 days later will fall on a Wednesday – the usual day that content comes out on Disney+.
If Thor: Love and Thunder follows this pattern, then we expect the Disney+ release date to be Wednesday, August 22, 2022. Like most Disney+ releases, the release time is expected to be 3 a.m. ET.
While you wait for Love and Thunder to stream, Disney+ is also the streaming home of the first three Thor movies (Thor, The Dark World and Ragnarok) as well as the spin-off series Loki starring Tom Hiddleston as Thor's mischievous brother.
Thor: Love and Thunder is due out in American theaters this Friday.
