Today, May 30, 2022, is Memorial Day—a federal holiday to remember and honor all who died while serving in the U.S. military.

The holiday is marked annually on the final Monday in May, and businesses, including restaurants have the option to close or remain open.

In the United States, the day is usually observed with traditions such as holding American flags at half-staff until noon, holding parades, hosting cookouts, visiting memorial sites and cemeteries, and the laying of flowers and insignia on the graves of fallen soldiers to honor and mourn the dead.

U.S. presidents also traditionally give a speech at the Arlington National Cemetery, and a wreath is typically laid at the Tomb of the Unknowns, which is in Arlington, Virginia.

At the 153rd national observance of the holiday last year, President Joe Biden gave a speech at which remembered the lives of the fallen and "those who gave their all in the service of America, in the service of freedom, in the service of justice."

"We remember their sacrifice, their valor, and their grace. We remember their smiles; their loves; their laughter; their essential, vibrant, and transcendent humanity," the president said in the speech.

Memorial Day officially became a federal holiday in 1971, three years after the Uniform Monday Holiday Act was passed by Congress. Most nonessential government services are closed on the day and federal workers are granted a paid day of leave.

Private businesses, including restaurants, can choose whether to remain open on Memorial Day. Many remain open on the federal holiday, and some offer discounts and deals for veterans and military members.
