Facebook baffled as 'ghost messages' from the past return to HAUNT users on Messenger app

February 2024 · 2 minute read

A FACEBOOK bug has been haunting users with "ghost messages" from their past.

The mysterious issue would resurface years-old threads in the Messenger app – for no apparent reason.

There are plenty of reasons to avoid replying to a message on Facebook.

Maybe you're trying to block out bad memories, avoid a sensitive topic, or you just have a deep loathing for the sender.

Whatever the reason, having old, buried messages digging themselves up as new isn't ideal.

"My Facebook is bugging out and keeps pulling up really old chat windows that are all messages that I didn't respond to and it's making me feel very attacked," said on concerned Facebook user, writing on Twitter.

Another explained: "Is Facebook bringing up people's old chats from years ago for anybody else?

"I keep accidentally replying to years-old messages on chats with people that randomly have opened.

"I also got a random message from somebody that was a year-old response so I don't think I'm alone."

And one user described it as being "haunted...like the ghost of s****y friend past".

Facebook admitted that the problem was very real, but said it's now been fixed.

The social network blamed issues with recent software updates for the bug.

In a statement, a Facebook spokesperson said: "Earlier today, some people may have experienced Facebook resending older messages.

"The issue, caused by software updates, has been fully resolved.

"We're sorry for any inconvenience."
